# Government ID Verification: Accepted fallback ID types

> A fallback ID type lets a Government ID Verification still pass when an end user submits a different document from the one they selected.

## What a fallback ID type is

For each [allowed ID type](https://help.withpersona.com/articles/21vQsGuteiH2m05oM297f3/) in a [Government ID Verification](https://help.withpersona.com/articles/5vXD7S7pQCq8Q9Z4RztxLw/), you can name one or more accepted _fallback_ ID types. A fallback lets the Verification accept a document that is not the one the end user picked from the list.

The problem it solves is a specific one. If your end users select Driver's License and then submit a passport, their attempts fail on the ID type, not on anything about the document itself. Naming Passport as a fallback for Driver's License stops that failure.

## Where to find it in the Dashboard

Fallbacks live in the same Allowed ID Types configuration as the ID types themselves, under **Enabled countries and ID types** on the Government ID Verification Template. Expand the country you want and add the fallback types to its **Allowed ID Classes** configuration.

You reach that template from **Inquiries > Templates** for a template inside an Inquiry, or from **Verifications > Templates** for one used alongside a Transaction, a Workflow, or the API.

## When to reach for it, and when not to

This is an advanced configuration. Use it when you have evidence that your end users are confusing one ID type for another, not on the chance that they might, because every fallback you add is a document you have agreed to accept.

One detail is easy to get wrong: the main ID type appears in the Allowed ID Classes list alongside the fallbacks you add. Leave it there. Removing it makes the Allowed ID type check fail even when the end user submits exactly the document you asked for.

Changes need to be published before they go live. For the full procedure, see [Government ID Verification: Setting accepted fallback ID types](https://help.withpersona.com/articles/PF0H0WuZaInkYNun8GTMg/).
