Document Verification: Classifications and document types

What Classifications are

Classification is the process of identifying which type of document was submitted. In a Document Verification Template, the Classifications section of a Document Group is the list of Document Types that group handles, and each one is marked as accepted or rejected.

That list does two jobs at once. Adding a Document Type to a group’s Classifications is what causes that group to be applied to a matching submission, and the accept or reject setting is what the Type Detection check reads. A document whose classified type is not accepted in the group that was applied fails the check.

Where to find it in the Dashboard

Open the template where your Document Verification is configured, select the Document Verification Template, then select the Document Group you want. In the Classifications section, the Add document type dropdown is where types are added.

If the template shows a yellow view only banner, follow the link it offers to the Flow Editor and make the change there.

Persona and Custom Document Types

The dropdown offers two kinds.

  • Persona document types are a library of common, standardized types that Persona manages, such as Bank Statement or Articles of Incorporation. If one exists for your use case, use it: accuracy and performance are better.
  • Custom document types are ones you define, for a unique or internal document that the Persona library does not cover. Each takes a label and a short description, and both are given to the model as context, so a vague label such as “Tax Document” invites misclassification.

Two behaviors that surprise people

A Document Type should belong to one Document Group per template. When a document arrives, the classification model picks the most likely type, and the group containing that type is the group that gets applied. Listing the same type in two groups makes which one wins unpredictable.

The General Document Group accepts anything. Every Document Verification Template has one. It can be renamed but not deleted, and you cannot add specific Document Types to its Classifications. A template that has only the General group will never fail Type Detection.

For the full procedure, including adding a Persona or Custom Document Type step by step, see Documents Verification: Configuring Classifications and Documents Types. For the product this sits inside, see Document AI.
