My ID has non-Latin characters

What to do when your ID uses a script like Cyrillic, Arabic, or Chinese, and how to make sure your details are entered correctly during verification.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

IDs in other scripts

Your passport or ID may print your name in a non-Latin script (for example Cyrillic, Arabic, or Chinese), with or without a transliteration into Latin characters. Verification can read the document and compare it with what you type, so it is worth getting the two to line up.

Entering your name

  • If the verification flow asks how your name appears, match the version on the document itself.
  • The printed name may have two parts: the native script and a Latin (romanized) version. Use the one the flow requests, usually the Latin transliteration.
  • Keep hyphenation and spaces exactly as printed.

If it does not match

If the flow cannot reconcile the scripts, contact the business you are verifying with. They can confirm how your name should be entered. See my name is different on my ID and my legal name changed for related mismatches.
