My ID is not in English

What happens when your ID is issued in another language, and how to handle a document you cannot read.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

Your document can still work

A foreign document is often accepted. Many verification flows accept IDs from other countries, and the scanner reads the document itself rather than requiring English. A passport issued abroad works the same way as one issued in your current country.

What to do when the flow seems to expect English

If the flow asks for a specific country or list of accepted documents and yours is not there, check whether there is a country selector or an “other document” option. Some flows let you pick the issuing country before you scan.

Entering details from a foreign ID

Type your details exactly as they appear on the document, including how your name is written. If your name uses characters the form cannot show, see Non-Latin characters on my ID for what to do.

If it is still rejected

If the flow will not accept your document, the business that asked you to verify can tell you what documents they accept for your situation, including whether a passport, residence permit, or another government-issued document would work instead.
