My residence permit won’t scan

Fix a residence permit that will not scan during verification, from lighting and framing to NFC and supported document types.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

Why a permit fails to scan

Residence permits come in card and sticker forms. A card scans like a regular ID; a sticker inside a passport relies on the passport page. Common causes of a failed scan:

  • The card or page is not filling the frame, or the camera moves.
  • Light is low, or glare hides the details.
  • The document needs NFC and the chip is not reading.
  • That verification flow does not accept the document type.

Try these

  • Photograph the whole card or page, flat and well lit, from directly above.
  • Use passport chip steps if the flow tries to read a chip.
  • Tilt the document slightly to move glare off the details.
  • If the flow rejects the type, contact the business that asked you to verify to confirm what they accept.
