My name is different on my ID

What to do when the name on your ID does not match the details you entered during verification, including retyping and legal-name changes.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

How names can be compared

Verification can compare the name you type with the name printed on your ID. Even small differences, like a middle name, hyphen, or a shortened first name, can surface as a mismatch. Where possible, type your name exactly as it appears on the document you are about to photograph.

Common fixes

  • Retype your name, copying the document word for word, including hyphens and spaces.
  • Match the order of names on the ID if the verification flow lets you reorder fields.
  • Use the exact version shown on the document rather than a nickname or married-in-wrong-order name.

If your name legally changed

If you recently changed your name, the ID may still show the old one. See my legal name changed for what to do, including using a document that matches your current legal name.
