Do I have to verify?

Understand why a business may require identity verification, what happens if you say no, and how it protects you.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

Why a business asks you to verify

Many businesses make identity verification a step before you can use their service. They do this to protect your account, to follow the law, or to make sure the person on the account is really you. Often it is a requirement, not a choice. See why am I being asked to verify? for the reasons behind it.

What happens if you choose not to

If you skip or stop a verification that a business requires, the business decides what happens next. You may not be able to finish signing up, sign in, or use the feature that needed the check. The business is the one to ask about alternatives, because the requirement is theirs.

Your right to know what you share

You do not have to share more than the business asks for, and you can ask what a step is for before you do it. If something feels like too much, raise it with the business that asked you to verify. The verification flow is theirs, and they can explain why a step is in it. See what the business decides about your verification.

When verification protects you

A verification is often what stops someone else from using your identity. So even when it feels like a hurdle, it is frequently there in your favor: the same check that slows you down is the one that keeps an impostor out of your account.
