There is glare on my ID photo

Remove glare and reflections from an ID photo during verification by adjusting light, angle, and surfaces.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

What causes glare

Glare is reflected light. Laminated cards and passport photo pages are reflective, so windows, overhead lights, and even bright clothing can bounce off the surface and wash out the details.

Remove the reflection

  • Change where light comes from: move so the main light is beside or behind the camera, not shining back at it.
  • Tilt the card very slightly away from the light source, then back, until the reflection moves off the document.
  • Photograph on a matte, dark surface to reduce bounce-back.
  • If you use a flash and it creates a hotspot, turn it off and add light from a lamp instead.

Keep going

If glare hides the barcode or photo, see why my ID looks blurry after the scan and low-light photos for the rest of the capture checklist.
