This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.
What low light does
In dim light the camera needs a long exposure, which makes photos blurry and hides details like the hologram and barcode. A document captured in shadow is often rejected for unreadable details.
Take it in better light
- Move to the brightest room you have, or stand near a window so the light falls on the ID, not behind you.
- Place the card on a light-colored surface so it contrasts with the background.
- Photograph from directly above to avoid casting your own shadow on it.
- If the verification flow offers a flash, use it; otherwise you can ask someone to hold a phone light at an angle onto the card.
If it still fails
Combine the fixes with the blurry scan and glare guides for a clean, well-lit document photo.
