My ID looks blurry after the scan

Fix an ID photo that comes out blurry during verification, from stabilizing the camera to lighting and focusing on the card.

This guide is for individuals going through a Persona-powered identity verification flow. While we’ve included helpful tips, the verification was set up by the business, service, or organization that asked you to verify. They use Persona as a tool, and they ultimately decide what’s required and can assist with your specific situation, if you’re having trouble.

Why the scan looks soft

A captured ID photo looks blurry when the camera moved, the card was angled, the light was low, or the camera focused on something behind the card.

Make the card sharp

  • Rest the phone or the ID on a steady surface, or brace your elbows, so neither moves.
  • Place the ID on a flat surface and photograph it from directly above, filling the frame.
  • Tap the preview to force focus on the card.
  • Brighten the room so the camera can use a faster shutter.
  • Remove any case or screen protector reflections that soften the image.

Retaking

Photos are usually easiest on a phone. See passport photo page is blurry if the blur is inside the document, or fixing glare if reflections are the issue.
